Strategies of Learning Effectively

Every human being is different. Each one is perfect in their own way. Even twins who are born from one person are different in certain ways.

You can be brilliant but a lazy student. A student can get away with this attitude from basic to senior high school but might not get lucky in terms of academic passes in the tertiary institution.

In tertiary institutions such as the university, polytechnic, nursing training and teacher training colleges, etc you meet equally brilliant students like you and when you take the ‘brilliant but lazy student’ attitude there, you will lack behind with your grades.

In 2012 when I gained admission at the University of Cape Coast to study B.A Social Sciences ( Geography & Sociology) , I still had that ‘brilliant but lazy student’ attitude and I soon learnt my lessons when I had bad grades in the first and second semester.

Yes , you are brilliant but you have to start learning more if you want to get better grades in any tertiary institution.

Although, we continue what we learn from the basic to tertiary institutions, things are a little different.

In level 100, I hardly learned after lectures unless there was a quiz. I did this thinking I am brilliant and I will pull through just as I did in basic school and senior high school. I was wrong because at the end of the first semester, my grades was all C’s and D’s.

Honestly, I was surprised. Considering my academic records, this grade was beneath me. I felt ashamed of myself because my GPA was so bad.

Surprisingly, this bad grades did not change me. I was still the brilliant but lazy student in the second semester. I had same bad grading as a result of this behavior.

Reality started to dawn on me in level 200 , first semester when I learnt that my cumulative GPA is what will be used to grade my class after graduation.

I begun to rethink on my learning behavior and how to start getting the A’s and B’s after examinations. I started learning at least three times in a week. This new change in my studies helped a me lot as I got my first ‘B’ grade in level 200 during the first semester. My CGPA also improved. I realized so learning regularly actually works.

I was happy and more motivated to continue this good behavior towards my studies.

In Level 300, first semester, I first had my A and B+’s. This was a huge achievement for me. It all worked out when I improved my learning skill of learning three times a week to learning everyday. Learning everyday is the most effective strategy to making A and B’s in tertiary examinations. I got the best grades when I developed the habit of learning notes after every lecture, learning everyday.

Consequently, when it is exams time, I do not struggle or get behind my notes. All lessons have already stuck in my head and all that I needed to do was just to look through.

I went from’ a brilliant but lazy student) to ‘a brilliant and hardworking student. The least grade since exhibiting this behavior was a ‘B’.

To be honest with you, I felt proud of myself. I kept working hard with studies and by level 400, my grades were always either A or B+.

It is true when they say ‘ Hardwork Pays’

As a student, learn everyday after class or lectures and see how excellently you will perform. There is definitely going to be an improvement in your academic grades.
