Top Cities in Ghana

Ghana is a country found in West Africa and it is the most peaceful country in West Africa. Like every country, Ghana has several cities and towns, but this article will focus on the top cities in Ghana.

The top cities in Ghana include:

ACCRA- is the capital city of Ghana. It is found in the Greater Accra Region. It is the most popular and populated city in Ghana. Accra is also the most developed city in Ghana because of its capital privilege. All headquarters of institutions in Ghana are located in Ghana, hence the massive development in the city. In recent years, many African-Americans from the USA and other western countries through the ‘Year of Return’ have visited Ghana, and their destination was always Accra because it is the capital. The national theatre is also located in this city, as well as the recently renovated Kwame Nkrumah Museum. Every major event is always held in Accra. Accra is a cosmopolitan city with about fifty percent of the Ghanaian populace are living in Accra.

KUMASI- is the popular city in Ghana called the ‘Garden City’. This city is known for its greenery nature hence the nickname ‘Garden City’. Kumasi is the second most developed city in Ghana and it has about fifty percent of factories in Ghana. Timber industry is very popular in this city and there are more business people here than any other city in Ghana. Kumasi is gradually becoming a tourist center with the rise in the establishment of new and luxurious suites, hotels and guest houses. The almost complete international airport will make Kumasi become the next biggest destination for African-Americans who visit Ghana every year. I live in Kumasi and it is the best city to live in when you are in Ghana. Unlike Accra, Kumasi is less populated. This city is also known to live sports. The Ghana National Team, BlackStars, has chosen the Baba Yara Sports Stadium as their home stadium because they always get a full stadium with spectators. People in Kumasi love football hence why they always show up to support our local teams and the national teams. Kumasi is the capital city of the Ashanti Region.

SUNYANI- is called the neatest city in Ghana. This city is found in the Brong-Ahafo Region and it is also a very popular city in Ghana. Majority of farmers are from the Brong and Asafo Regions. Our foodstuffs like plantain, cassava, watermelon, onions, tomatoes, etc are all grown and cultivated in the Brong and Asafo Regions. The cultivated foodstuffs are now sent to the city Sunyani for transportation to other cities like Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, among others.

Unlike Accra and Kumasi, the cost of living is low. I am yet to personally travel to this city but I look forward to going there in 2024.

TAMALE- is the capital city of the Northern Region. This city recently got their domestic airport upgrade to international standard. Like Sunyani, Tamale is also known for its agricultural practices. Products like cassava, plantain, shea butter, sugarcane, etc, are all grown and cultivated in the Northern Region. Tamale is also one of the cities in Gh with a huge sports stadium and it sometimes hosts the National Team, the BlackStars.

CAPE COAST- is a city that I love and I want to go back there soon for vacation. I lived in Cape Coast city between 2012-2016 as a student of the University Of Cape Coast. This city is known to have some of the best senior high schools. The first secondary school in Ghana is located in Cape Coast. This city is a coastal area and it has a very serene environment suitable.

TAKORADI- is also one of the top cities in Ghana. Takoradi is where Ghana’s first and largest harbor is located. The Takoradi harbor is one of Ghana’s most important industries and this has developed the city Takoradi in so many ways.
