Top Five Universities In Ghana

Education has always been the Key to Success and Livelihood. It comes in two forms, thus Formal and Informal Education.

In the olden days, formal education was not popular hence, more people depended on informal education. Informal Education in my opinion was the best in shaping people to become better and improve their lives regardless of their level of formal education. Formal Education is the one taught in Schools.

There is a standard formal education which involves junior to senior levels and then the tertiary institution such as universities, polytechnics, training colleges, vocational schools etc.

There are several universities in Ghana but the following are the top five universities in Ghana.

UNIVERSITY OF GHANA- is Ghana’s premier university and it is situated in Legon, Accra. University of Ghana is also known as Legon, thus it is nicknamed after the city that the school is located. For more than sixty years, this university has produced hundreds of thousands of elite people from different professional careers including teachers, professors, doctors, lawyers, architects, fashion designers, actors, caterers, among others.

This university was created to produce more graduates from the social sciences and humanities learning theories. It has equally lived up to the expectation.

KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY- is the science related university created by the Ghana government to produce professionals from the medical field like doctors, pharmacists, dentists, optometrists, etc. Majority of doctors, pharmacists, etc from Ghana are graduates of this science university. Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is located in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. Students of this has over the produced cars, machines and made some few ground breaking research.

UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST- is where I attended my tertiary and I read Social Sciences with Economics, Geography and Sociology as my Majors. University of Cape Coast is an education based university. It was created mainly to take on education related courses to graduate professional teachers for the country. This school started as a teacher training college and it evolved into a university with other disciplines aside education courses. The United of Cape Coast has expanded its courses from education to law, social sciences and humanities, sciences, arts, etc. It is located in the Central Region of Ghana.

UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, WINNEBA – used to be a similar institution to the University of Cape Coast. They both were teacher training colleges that produced professional teachers. Unlike University of Cape Coast which has a uniform of other courses and not education course driven, University of Education is the official education university and Education courses are compulsory. This institution is also located in the Central Region of Ghana. University of Education Winnedba has opened more campuses in other regions and this has helped many people to study in their regions regardless where the headquarters of the university is.

CENTRAL UNIVERSITY- is Ghana’s first private university and it is the biggest private university in Ghana. Central University has been around for about twenty years and they have produced a lot of professionals in the country. This university has over the years become an alternative for Ghanaians who did not get admission in any of the top three universities in Ghana. The downside with this institution is that, it is very expensive.

OTHER MENTIONS

CHRISTIAN SERVICE UNIVERSITY- is the second most popular private university in Ghana. It is located in Kumasi and this institution has produced a lot professionals from different course backgrounds. Christian Service University is where I would have attended my tertiary institution if I did not get the opportunity at the University of Cape Coast.

GARDEN CITY UNIVERSITY- is also located in Kumasi and it is one of the best private universities in Ghana. They offer various courses for every one.
