My First Job

As a person, you are always taught and prepared for a job you will take after graduating a tertiary institution be it a university, polytechnic, teacher training college , etc.

Consequently, as we move up the education ladder, we as students are already prepared for the job market. I graduated from University of Ghana in 2016 with a Second Class Upper in  Geography and Sociology.

Just like my classmates, I was also preparing for a job after school. I was actually confused at the beginning because I did not know which field I wanted to enter after graduation. I was torn between working at a government institution and working at at a private bank.

After graduating from the university of Ghana in 2016, I did my national service at the Ghana Armed Forces at Burma Camp. It was a nice experience working with the military. They are extremely disciplined and once I was done with my national service in 2017, i became even more disciplined.

I started searching for a job during the national service and by God’s Grace, I got a job at Ghana Forces immediately after the national service. I was employed as a Principal Executive Officer at the Ashanti regional headquarters 4 Batallion in Kumasi. I served my national service at the general headquarters so I moved back to Kumasi to start my first ever job.

It was a nice experience, getting a job immediately after national service is certainly a Miracle from God.

It is not easy to get a job in Ghana, West Africa because of the high unemployment rate in the country. The rate of unemployment keep spiraling upwards in my country Ghana and the government seems not to do only little about the situation. Thousands of students graduate each year from universities, polytechnics, teacher and nursing training colleges but the government can only absorb few of them in its sector, private companies are a few hence unemployment rate keep rising.

As a result, i was happy to have gotten a job, my first job right after finishing my national service. I started working the following week after receiving my employment letter from the Defence ministry.

On my first day to work on my first job, I was very happy. I was thinking “I am finally going to be independent, a grown woman”. When i entered the premises of 4 Battalion, i asked the security where to go and they directed me to my office.

I reached my office, greeted and they processed my employment and others related documents. I started working right away.

The next day was a learning process. I was taught how to receive a mail or letter, stamp it with the seen and date stamp, send it to the chief executive officer to sign and publish a civilian employee memorandum on it if it demands to be published.

On the second day, i also taught how to publish the weekly civilian employees memorandum.

Each day was a learning process and four years now, i am an authority in my field.

Thank you for reading.
