Most Popular Foods in Ghana and How to Prepare Them

Food is anything edible that you can eat. There are different types of foods and thus those you can eat raw and those you can eat after cooking it, as well as those that can be eaten raw and cooked as well.

Some foods that are eaten after it is cooked includes jollof rice, oil rice, pizza, fufu, fried rice, omelet, etc.

The following are some of the most popular foods in Ghana.

JOLLOF RICE – is my favorite food and it is very easy to prepare. Jollof rice is basically a combination of rice and tomato stew. Ghana is known to have the best Jollof rice in taste. To prepare Jollof rice, first of all, buy all the ingredients such as pepper, oil, tomato, plain rice, onions, sardine or mackerel, carrots, green pepper, chicken or goat meat. Put your pot on fire and add oil. After a minute, add onions and later tomato. Stir and add pepper after a minute or two. Add a half cup of water and allow to bowl for five minutes. At this point, you can add your mackerel or sardine, and add ya carrots and green pepper. Let it bowl for five to minutes. Once the stew is ready, add any cup of plain rice to it and stir for a minute, and add water. Cover it and wait for five minutes. Stir the Jollof rice again and cover for another five minutes. Do this repeatedly until you realize that it is fully cooked and ready to serve.

FUFU- is the most popular food in Ghana. It is eaten nationwide by everyone although it comes from the Ashanti region. Fufu is the most eaten food prepared in Ghana by the Asantes in Ashanti Region. The ingredients for this dish are plantain, cassava, and all the needed ingredients for any type of soup that you like to eat with your fufu. Generally, this is how one can prepare Fufu. Firstly, peel your plantain and cassavas, and add water to boil for about 20 minutes. Remove from fire and blend both the cassava and plantain. Secondly, prepare your soup around the same time. Grind your boiled pepper, garden eggs and onion, and pour to water and put it on fire. Let the soup boil for five minutes and add tomatoes. Add all your meat and fish to the soup and let it boil for 30 minutes. Soup and Fufu is ready to serve.

RICE and PALAVA SAUCE – is one of the most popular foods in Ghana. It is basically plain rice and palava sauce.To prepare this dish, put your pan on fire and add water to boil. Pour a cup of rice after five minutes and wait for twenty minutes for a completely cooked plain rice. After your plain rice is cooked, start preparing your palava sauce also known as kontomire stew. Put your pan on fire and add your palm oil. Add  your smoked fish and your sliced onions. After a minute, add your blended pepper and tomatoes, and add water. Allow it to cook for a while and add your sliced salmon or mackerel. After two minutes, add the kontomire leaves and allow to boil for at least twenty minutes.

WAAKYE- is one of the popular foods eaten in Ghana by Ghanaians and foreigners. It is very easy to cook and can be served with a simple stew. The ingredients needed to prepare Waakye include brown rice, hibiscus leaves, tomatoes, pepper, onions, sardine, salmon, etc.
